Abstract

The rapid development of information technology encourages educational institutions to adopt digital systems to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of administrative management, including teacher and staff attendance. This study aims to design and implement an automated attendance system based on fingerprint biometrics at SMKS Ibrahimy Situbondo. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method with an applied research approach, consisting of literature study, observation, interviews, system design using the waterfall model, and testing through black box testing. The research subjects included teachers and administrative staff as the main system users. The results show that the fingerprint-based attendance system improved efficiency by reducing attendance recording time by up to 80%, increased data accuracy to 98%, and reduced the time required for attendance recap from 2–3 hours to less than 10 minutes. Moreover, the system positively impacted teacher discipline, as tardiness and absenteeism were automatically recorded and could not be manipulated. In conclusion, the fingerprint-based biometric attendance system proved effective as an alternative to manual methods and can be further developed through integration with academic information systems and digital notifications.
